OSCE Chairperson-in-Office welcomes the release of the British and Canadian detainees in Belgrade
VIENNA 7 October 2000
VIENNA, 7 October 2000 - The Chairperson-in-Office of the OSCE, Austrian Foreign Minister Benita Ferrero-Waldner has expressed her relief about the release of the three foreigners detained in Belgrade, two British members of the OSCE Mission in Kosovo and one young Canadian, whose father is still being held under investigation. The four men were arrested by the Yugoslav Army on July 31st charged with terrorist activities.
"I have always maintained that the charges against the four men were politically motivated. The recent democratic changes in Belgrade and their quick release are proof of that fact," said Ms. Ferrero-Waldner.
The Personal Representative of the Chairperson-in-Office for South-Eastern Europe, Ambassador Albert Rohan, who is currently visiting Belgrade, had the occasion to meet with the three released. It is expected that the fourth detainee will be released within the next few days.
