OSCE appoints Head of Kosovo Verification Mission

WARSAW, 17 October 1998 - The OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Minister Bronislaw Geremek, appointed today Ambassador William Graham Walker of the United States as Head of the OSCE Kosovo Verification Mission.
Ambassador Walker has had a distinguished 37-year career in the Foreign Service, serving as Ambassador to El Salvador from 1988-92 and as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State from 1985-88. He also held diplomatic assignments in Bolivia, Honduras, Brazil, Japan and Peru. Most recently, he served as Special Representative of the UN Secretary General as head of the United Nations Transitional Administration for Eastern Slovonia (UNTAES), in Croatia.
In his letter, Mr. Geremek wrote that this appointment would offer Ambassador Walker a "unique opportunity to contribute to peace and political stability in the Balkans."
