OSCE Chairman-in-Office issues statement on Tajikistan
7 December 1996
BERN, 7 Decenber 1996 - The Chairman-in-Office of the OSCE, Swiss Foreign Minister Flavio Cotti, issued the following statement from Bern today:
The Chairman-in-Office of the OSCE is seriously concerned about the deterioration of the situation which has taken place in Tajikistan, in particular in the last days. He deplores that the different Tajik sides are entering into coalitions against each other, pushing their own country again to the brink of civil war.
The Chairman-in-Office condemns in the strongest possible terms the recent gross use of force and threats to the lives of UNMOT staff members by forces of the Government of Tajikistan.
He reminds all sides to the conflict that peaceful settlement of disputes and non-use of military force are fundamental OSCE principles. He appeals to the Government and the United Tajik Opposition to stop fighting immediately and to return to negotiations under UN-auspices. He calls on all political forces in Tajikistan to make every effort for national reconciliation.
