BRUSSELS, 10 February 2006 - The OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Belgian Foreign Minister Karel De Gucht, welcomed the election of Fatmir Sejdiu as the new president of Kosovo.
He said he was delighted that the succession of late President Rugova could take place quickly and in accordance with the constitutional framework of Kosovo. In this way, an obstacle to the start of negotiations on the future status of Kosovo has been removed and the discussions can begin on 20 February 2006 in Vienna.
The OSCE Chairmanship hopes that Belgrade and Pristina will co-operate constructively in this process with a view to finding a solution based on consensus, which can only contribute to the stability of the entire region.
