OSCE Chair welcomes steps to de-escalate situation in Ukraine
BERN, 28 January 2014 – The OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Swiss Foreign Minister Didier Burkhalter welcomed today’s developments in Ukraine and appealed to all sides to remain engaged in political dialogue.
“I welcome the steps taken today, such as the revocation of recent legislative amendments,” Burkhalter said. “I hope these steps will help to de-escalate the tensions and bring Ukraine closer to a peaceful resolution of the current crisis by democratic means.”
“I appeal to all sides to stay engaged in efforts to reach necessary compromises in a broad political dialogue. And I urge everyone to refrain from violence and measures which could lead to further escalation of the stand-off and plunge the country into a deeper crisis,” Burkhalter said. He also reiterated his offer of OSCE support to overcome the crisis.
