OSCE to hold seminar on professional skills and the market economy

VIENNA, 25 March 2004 - An international seminar focusing on the role of the OSCE in promoting and supporting the development of human capacity - in order to further economic reforms and enhance stability - will be held in the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek, next week.
It is aimed at helping to meet the challenges many states are facing in their transition to market economies: the need for well-trained professionals, in both public and private sectors, who can participate in and contribute to the economic transition and policy-making processes, including the reform of the legal and structural frameworks and the strengthening of good governance at all levels.
The two-day event, entitled "Professional skills needed for developing a market economy", will be organized by the OSCE on 29 and 30 March. It will bring together over 180 representatives of government and state institutions, international organizations, academia, business sector and civil society.
Speakers at the opening session will include Kyrgyzstan's Deputy Prime Minister, Djoomart Otorbaev, Professor Solomon Cohen of the Erasmus University, Ambassador Ivan Naydenov, representative of the OSCE Chairmanship, Ambassador Markus Muller, Head of the OSCE Centre in Bishkek, and Marcin Swiecicki, Co-ordinator of OSCE Economic and Environmental Activities.
The seminar will address specific gaps and needs related to training staff for public administration and the academic field, as well as business-related training, education to promote sustainable development and employment related training for young and newly graduated.
The Bishkek meeting is the last in a series of three preparatory seminars (Yerevan, Dublin, Bishkek) leading up to the annual Economic Forum, that will take place in Prague from 31 May to 4 June 2004. This year's theme is "New Challenges for Building up Institutional and Human Capacity for Economic Development and Co-operation."
Media representatives can attend the opening plenary of the Bishkek conference, on Monday, 29 March, from 9.00, as well as the closing plenary, starting on Tuesday, 30 March, at 11.00. The closing plenary will be followed by a press conference at 13.00.
Registration for media representatives interested in attending will start on Monday, 29 March 2004, at 8:00, at the conference venue - the Pinara-Bishkek Hotel.
