BISHKEK 1 March 2004
BISHKEK, 1 March 2004 - A workshop to encourage women to start small businesses in rural areas will open tomorrow in Kyrgyzstan. The two-day event, organised by the OSCE Centre in Bishkek will take place in the Karabalta district of Kyrgyzstan.
"Support for small and medium-sized enterprises is not only the key to economic growth of the country but also a door to its social and political development", said Ambassador Markus Muller, Head of the OSCE Centre. He also pointed out that women have played an important role in some remote areas of the country and this needs to be supported, now and in the future.
The workshop aims at promoting and fostering women entrepreneurship and assisting the process of economic revitalization and job creation in the rural regions. About 50 participants will be trained on basic elements of entrepreneurial thinking and practical skills in business plan development. The experts will provide information on taxation, licensing, registration, and inspections regulations in the Kyrgyz Republic.
The workshop will also provide information on the availability of credit from both international and Kyrgyz institutions engaged in micro-finance activities for entrepreneurs, particularly in the regions, mechanisms to distribute and collateralize loans, and business support services.
