OSCE establishes new field office in Osh, Kyrgyzstan
VIENNA 18 February 2000
VIENNA, 18 February 2000 - The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe will open a new field office in Osh, Kyrgyzstan, to assist the OSCE Centre in Bishkek in carrying out its work.
The decision to establish the field office was approved by the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna recently.
The Osh field office will become a co-ordinating point for OSCE activities in southern Kyrgyzstan. Due to the distances and available transport routes between Bishkek and Osh, it was determined a field office in Osh would be beneficial and complementary to the Centre in Bishkek.
The OSCE Centre in Bishkek opened in January 1999 and has been working to encourage the development of necessary conditions for the further integration of Kyrgzstan into the OSCE community. Emphasis is also placed on the regional context in all areas, including the economic, environmental, human and political aspects of security and stability. The Centre also maintains contacts with local authorities, universities, research institutions and non-governmental organizations, and assists with arranging OSCE events, such as seminars and special visits.
