OSCE Centre provides support, training on environmental sustainability and climate change for Kyrgyzstan teachers
BISHKEK, 24 September 2009. - A two-day course began today for teachers from different regions of Kyrgyzstan to discuss integrating sustainable development and climate change challenges into educational programmes in schools and universities.
The training is taking place with support of OSCE Centre in Bishkek, in co-operation with the Central Asia Regional Environmental Centre CAREC and with financial support from the European Union.
"Kyrgyzstan has already experienced consequences of climate change, such as an increased risk of natural disasters, environmental migration and melting glaciers. Younger generations should be properly prepared to live in a low-carbon world, and a lot can be done through education," said Kimberley Bulkley, Senior Economic and Environmental Officer of OSCE Centre in Bishkek.
The course also aims to strengthen co-operation between educational organizations and the broader public and the scientific community, as well as improve their access to information on climate change.
