OSCE Centre supports roundtable discussion on DNA forensics in Kyrgyzstan
BISHKEK, 26 June, 2009 - A roundtable discussion on the use of DNA in forensic investigations in Kyrgyzstan, supported by the OSCE Centre, was held today.
The discussion, organized by local company "DNA-Technologies-Manas" brought together more than 50 representatives from the government, law enforcement agencies, parliament and civil society to discuss the organizational and legislative aspects of establishing a DNA forensic database in Kyrgyzstan.
"Today's event was supported by the OSCE Centre to promote discussion among specialists on steps to take advantage of DNA forensics in Kyrgyzstan to detect crimes," said Lilian Darii, Deputy Head of the OSCE Centre in Bishkek, adding that the roundtable discussion has helped DNA-Technologies-Manas identify potential sponsors for setting up a DNA database.
Andrey Semihodsky, the Director of UK-based company "Medical Genomics", described experience of foreign countries in the use of DNA expertise. The event concluded with the participants adopting a resolution with practical recommendations and creating a working group to revise related legislation.
