Economic programme crucial for Kyrgyzstan, says Special Representative of the OSCE Chairman

BISHKEK, 12 April - Alojz Peterle, the Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office for Central Asia, has welcomed the announcement of the Kyrgyz Government on developing a plan aimed at providing the social and economic rehabilitation of the country.
Commenting on the plan, called "100 days - 100 steps," he said: "In discussions with the Government it was agreed to emphasize on the economic programme. Adoption and implementation of such a working plan is crucial for the economic stability and development of Kyrgyzstan".
"The Kyrgyz Government may need assistance from the OSCE to implement such an economic plan," said Vice Prime Minister, Daniyar Usenov. "Such assistance could be in the form of seminars and workshops, as well as in the form of recommendations on issues dealing with small and medium business rehabilitation, taxation, customs, the financial and banking system".
The Special Representative welcomed the assurances of the Kyrgyz Government that the issue of land seizure would only be settled through legal channels.
During the last two days, Mr Peterle had meetings and consultations with representatives of the Kyrgyz Government, political parties, the chairpersons of the parliamentary committees on defence, security, law enforcement, agriculture and social affairs, constitutional law and international affairs. He also raised with governmental officials the issues of migration, ethnic minorities and agriculture and had discussions with representatives of the business community and international organizations present in Bishkek.
At a meeting with Kyrgyz Prime Minister Kurmanbek Bakiev, Mr Peterle was told that the Kyrgyz authorities are in favour of further effective co-operation with the OSCE and its structures.
"We appreciate the OSCE's assistance to Kyrgyzstan with regard to economic development and the preparation of the presidential elections in the country," said Prime Minister Bakiev.
This was the Special Representative's second working visit to Kyrgyzstan since the events of 24 March, which followed the second round of parliamentary elections.
