Parliamentarians agree to strengthen regional dialogue on socio-economic development
SARAJEVO 4 October 2003
SARAJEVO, 4 October 2003 - Over the last two days, parliamentarians from throughout south-eastern Europe gathered in Sarajevo to discuss common social and economic development goals, and how regional contact can assist in this endeavour.
The inter-parliamentary conference, entitled "The Role of Parliaments in Human and Economic development in South East Europe" aimed to build and reinforce the institutional relations between parliaments in the region. The overarching theme was on regional co-operation in reducing poverty and developing a viable regional business and economic infrastructure.
"Regional co-operation is possible as South East Europe shares common issues and goals," said Ambassador Pascal Fieschi, Head of the OSCE Mission in Kosovo.
"This forum can be considered a step in further involving parliamentarians to tackle and solve the problems in the region."
Experts from international organizations and members of several European parliaments discussed recent developments with parliamentarians from the region, in particular the Stabilisation and Association Process (SAP), the Poverty Reduction Strategy Process (PRSP), and implementation of the OSCE participating States' commitments in the human, economic and environmental dimension.
The conference concluded with a series of recommendations to strengthen the regional inter-parliamentary dialogue on economic policies and business promotion, market-oriented reforms, socio-economic development and poverty reduction strategies. The parliamentarians highlighted the need for co-ordination of the country-specific poverty reduction and socio-economic development policies, as it would bear a significant regional development potential, such as in the area of trade, transport and energy.
The OSCE welcomes participants' intention to continue exploring possibilities for regional institutional co-operation on the issues discussed and stands ready to assist in this process.
