International organizations condemn assault on housing official in Bosnia and Herzegovina

SARAJEVO, 26 March 2003 - The OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Office of the High Representative (OHR), the United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees (UNHCR) and the European Union Police Mission (EUPM) have strongly condemned the assault on the Head of the Housing Office in Zvornik, Republika Srpska, that occurred yesterday morning.
According to information available at this time, the Head of the Housing Office was stabbed by a displaced person who was to be evicted from a home he had been occupying illegally. The Head of the Housing Office was immediately taken to the Zvornik hospital. The injuries he has suffered are not life-threatening. The suspect has been arrested and transferred to the prison in Bijeljina.
The OSCE Mission, OHR, UNHCR and EUPM have called on the competent authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina to carry out a full investigation of this incident and ensure appropriate prosecution. The implementation process of the country's property laws must continue, and threats, violence or similar behaviour against housing officials or their family members must be pursued rigorously by the competent authorities.
