OSCE condemns anonymous threat to politician in Bosnia and Herzegovina
SARAJEVO 19 December 2000
SARAJEVO, 19 December 2000 - The OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina strongly condemns the anonymous threatening letter that was sent to Braco Kulenovic, the SDP candidate for governor of the Una-Sana Canton.
"The OSCE would like to stress that there is no room for such threats in the democratic process," said the OSCE Spokesperson Luke Zahner. "This cheap and cowardly attempt at intimidation is a throwback to the time when such fear tactics were a way of achieving political goals. We expect that all political parties in the Una-Sana Canton will publicly condemn this act, and the local police will investigate it vigorously."
The OSCE is actively engaged in the process of overseeing the implementation of election results in the Una-Sana Canton and elsewhere throughout the country, in close co-operation with the Office of the High Representative.
The OSCE established its present Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina on 18 December 1995. In accordance with the General Framework Agreement for Peace (GFAP), the OSCE Mission activities are to promote democratization and the building of a vibrant civil society, foster the development of professional journalism and monitor the rights of journalists, monitor and advance the human rights situation, supervise the conduct of elections, and encourage regional stabilization through arms control and confidence and security-building measures. The OSCE Mission continues to work closely with other international organizations and local institutions to implement the Dayton Peace Accords.
