Civil society takes part in anti-corruption campaign in Bosnia and Herzegovina

SARAJEVO, 12 October 2000 - As part of the overall Anti-Corruption Campaign of the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Civil Society Section of the Democratization Department will organize over 40 activities and events over the next three weeks. The overall goal is to raise citizens' awareness of corruption, thus allowing voters to make an informed choice at the polls.
This Civil Society Anti-Corruption Public Outreach Programme will be carried out by local NGOs and OSCE Community Facilitators, who received initial training at a seminar conducted in Neum to enhance their understanding of corruption issues specific to Bosnia and Herzegovina. For the remaining pre-election period events will include radio shows, public tribunes, roundtable discussions, and public meetings, which will cover the whole territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The OSCE established its present Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina on 18 December 1995. In accordance with the General Framework Agreement for Peace (GFAP), the OSCE Mission activities are to: promote Democratization and the building of a vibrant civil society, foster the development of professional journalism and monitor the rights of journalists, monitor and advance the Human Rights situation, supervise the conduct of Elections, and encourage Regional Stabilization through arms control and confidence and security-building measures. The OSCE Mission continues to work closely with other international organizations and local institutions to implement the Dayton Peace Accords.
