Officials participate in Market Democracy Program in Bosnia and Herzegovina
SARAJEVO 8 September 2000
SARAJEVO, 7 September 2000 - The OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina co-sponsored a high-level seminar with the U.S. European Command (EUCOM). The seminar, Market Democracy Program, was held 6-7 September 6th in Sarajevo.
The Market Democracy Program combines traditional seminars with virtual economic simulation to provide government and business leaders a unique learning environment for studying the principles of a market economy. The program provided a two-day economic simulation in which the growth and development of a fictitious country are shaped by the interactive decisions of seminar participants, who are in this case members of the presidency, ministers, parliamentarians, business executives and high-level international participants. They played the roles of firms, financial institutions, international organizations, and the government.
To date, the Market Democracy Program is the only initiative that exposes national leadership to the full range of issues surrounding the functioning of democracies, offering participants the opportunity to shape their environment and avoid conflicts.
The OSCE established its present Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina on 18 December 1995. In accordance with the General Framework Agreement for Peace (GFAP), the OSCE Mission activities are to: promote democratization and the building of a vibrant civil society, foster the development of professional journalism and monitor the rights of journalists, monitor and advance the human rights situation, supervise the conduct of elections, and encourage regional stabilization through arms control and confidence and security-building measures. The OSCE Mission continues to work closely with other international organizations and local institutions to implement the Dayton Peace Accords.
