OSCE trains NGOs in public advocacy in Bosnia and Herzegovina
SARAJEVO 17 August 2000
SARAJEVO, 17 August 2000 - As part of OSCE efforts to increase the participation of civil society actors in policy and decision-making processes in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Mission is organizing two seminars on public advocacy in Neum. Eighty NGOs from all regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina were selected to take part in the training seminars, based on a field-partner analysis undertaken by OSCE.
The main focus of the seminars is advocacy as a policy process; analysis of decision-making processes; identification of key stakeholders; awareness raising amongst constituents, and building credibility. The training will take place in Neum, Hotel Stella, 18-20 August 18-20, for NGOs from the Banja Luka and Mostar regions, and from 25-27 August for NGOs from Sarajevo and Tuzla. They will be conducted by Dr. Damir Huremovic of the New Bosnia Fund Agency, an expert in the development of non-governmental sectors.
"A strong civil society is a crucial for a sustainable democratic development," says Sverre Johan Kvale, Director of the OSCE Democratization Department. "I see a lot of potential among NGOs in Bosnia and Herzewgovina to become active players in regional politics, by representing the needs of their communities and holding public officials accountable."
The OSCE established its present Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina on 18 December 1995. In accordance with the General Framework Agreement for Peace (GFAP), the OSCE Mission activities are to: promote Democratization and the building of a vibrant civil society, foster the development of professional journalism and monitor the rights of journalists, monitor and advance the Human Rights situation, supervise the conduct of Elections, and encourage Regional Stabilization through arms control and confidence and security-building measures. The OSCE Mission continues to work closely with other international organizations and local institutions to implement the Dayton Peace Accords.
