Law on the Federation Ombudsmen adopted in Bosnia and Herzegovina

SARAJEVO, 15 August 2000 - The Office of the High Representative and OSCE welcome the decision of the Federation Parliament on 29 July to adopt the Organic Law on the Federation Ombudsmen. This law will regulate the appointment, powers and responsibilities of the Ombudsmen in accordance with the Federation Constitution.
The law was drafted with the assistance of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe. It conforms to European and international standards. Its adoption fulfils one of the criteria for membership of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Council of Europe.
Twelve months after the law has entered into force, the Federation Parliament will for the first time be entitled to appoint the three permanent Ombudsmen to serve four-year terms. The current Ombudsmen have been appointed by the OSCE.
The Office of the High Representative and OSCE credit the Federation Parliament for demonstrating its confidence in the important role of the Ombudsmen to protect and promote
human rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Office of the High Representative and OSCE look forward to the Federation authorities' increased support of the Ombudsmen and to their full co-operation in implementing future recommendations issued by this institution.
