UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security in focus at OSCE-supported workshop in Bosnia and Herzegovina

KONJIC, Bosnia and Herzegovina, 14 December 2016 – The implementation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security was the focus of a two-day workshop which concluded today in Konjic, organized by the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) and the country’s Security Ministry and Gender Equality Agency.

The workshop gathered gender focal points from numerous institutions, including the State Investigation Protection Agency, the Border Police, the Directorate for the Co-ordination of Police Bodies, the Service for Foreigners’ Affairs, the Agency for Education and Professional Training, and the Police Support Agency. 

Head of the OSCE Mission Ambassador Jonathan Moore stressed the importance of integrating gender perspectives into the current BiH Strategy for Prevention and Combating Terrorism 2015-2020. “I hope the workshop helps the participants to advance their skills so they are able to fully implement domestic and international legal provisions and standards related to gender equality and gender mainstreaming in the security sector.”

The Head of the Department for International Co-operation at the BiH Ministry of Security Ankica Tomic emphasized that the education of gender focal points is a key precondition for incorporating gender perspectives and gender equality principles into the Ministry’s work. “This is very significant in the context of modern security challenges, especially preventing and combating violent extremism which requires a multi-sector and comprehensive approach.”

The workshop was also attended by a representative of the BiH Gender Equality Agency Sasa Leskovac. “We highly appreciate the opportunity to inform the participants about our work as well as to pass practical examples on how to integrate gender perspectives into the policies and legislation which guide their work,” he said. “I look forward to extending similar initiatives to other BiH Ministries.”
