OSCE Centre helps in development of economic courts in Kazakhstan
ALMATY 3 September 2004
ALMATY, 3 September 2004 - A new TV programme, which aims to raise awareness among foreign and domestic investors of their legal rights as well as of the work of economic courts, will be aired in Kazakhstan in September.
This is part of a project launched in July by the OSCE Centre in Almaty together with the Committee on Court Administration under the Supreme Court of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The project will contribute to improving access to justice in general as well as raising investors' confidence in the judicial system.
"The development of a market economy in Kazakhstan necessitates the development of a specialized economic court system," said Ambassador Ivar Vikki, Head of the OSCE Centre in Almaty. "Professionalism of the economic courts on the one hand and the active position of citizens and trust in economic courts on the other hand will contribute to fair competition and observance of the rule of law in the country".
The programme - entitled "Access to justice in Kazakhstan: the role and functions of economic courts" - has been produced by the TV station, NTK-Kazakhstan. Representatives of the Supreme Court, the Committee, the Centre, as well as economic judges have taken part in the shooting.
The Kazakh and Russian versions of the video will be shown during the second week of September on the local channel of NTK-Kazakhstan (on 8 and 10 September accordingly). Copies of it will be further disseminated in the regions to economic courts, business associations and the civil society.
This project is in line with the general directions of work of the OSCE Centre in the country, namely, strengthening of the rule of law, contribution to the creation of a favourable economic climate, improvement of interaction between state bodies and the mass media.
