OSCE Centre opens Internet café for regional journalists in Kazakhstan
TARAZ 23 August 2004
TARAZ, 23 August 2004 - The first OSCE Internet Cafe for regional journalists in Kazakhstan opened today in the southern city of Taraz.
A similar Internet café will soon open in Pavlodar, in the north of the country. Both of them will operate within the premises of regional media centres of Adil Soz, the main media NGO in Kazakhstan, which provides legal support to journalists and monitors the media situation in the country and worldwide. This initiative is supported by the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media.
"Such cafes are important for regional journalists, especially in light of the 19 September parliamentary elections," said Tatiana Pak of the Adil Soz centre in Zhambyl region. She welcomed the initiative by the OSCE Centre in Almaty to help regional journalists get free access to Internet resources.
The project is a continuation of other efforts undertaken by the OSCE Centre in support of professional media development, assistance to regional journalism and promotion of freedom of the media in Kazakhstan, where media outlets often experience financial difficulties and have limited access to online information.
