Seminar in Almaty prepares for Rio+10 Summit

ALMATY, 6 May 2002 - Economic and environmental issues in Central Asia will be the focus of a two-day seminar in Almaty. The seminar, to be held on 10-11 May, will be an important preparatory event for the World Summit in September 2002 in Johannesburg (Rio+10).
The Summit, to be held 10 years after the first UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio da Janeiro, Brazil, will discuss issues such as economic development and environmental protection, development aid and external debt, poverty and conflicts alleviation, combating terrorism, international security and human rights.
The purpose of the Almaty seminar is to raise awareness about the issues in the World Summit agenda and to work out recommendations for the Central Asian countries. The recommendations will be presented to the official delegations of Kazakhstan and other Central Asian countries. They will be also presented at special meetings of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) during the Summit.
The regional seminar "Rio+10: Central Asia" is organized by the OSCE Centre in Almaty, together with the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia, the UN and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Kazakhstan. It is fully funded by the German Government.
Representatives and experts from ministries, international organizations, and NGOs are invited to participate in the discussions and to elaborate the recommendations.
