OSCE Centre promotes efficient management of trans-boundary water resources
ALMATY, 31 May 2007 - Sustainable management of ground water resources that stretch across international borders was the topic as experts from Central Asia and the Caucasus began meeting today at a workshop supported by the OSCE Centre in Almaty.
The two-day workshop brings together governmental officials, water management experts and academics to assess trans-boundary ground water and discuss possible follow-up activities, including exchanging information and co-ordinating policy.
"Close co-operation among the countries is imperative for effective water management and security in this region," said Ambassador Ivar Vikki, Head of the OSCE Centre. "This event provides another opportunity for the countries to share experience and exchange information on trans-boundary ground waters."
During the workshop, participants will review national expert evaluations and develop recommendations for a regional assessment report, which is to be presented at the Sixth United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Ministerial Conference "Environment for Europe," to be held in October in Belgrade.
The event was organized jointly by the OSCE Centre, the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization Cluster Office in Almaty and UNECE. The workshop is part of the Centre's programme to promote water management and fight soil contamination and land degradation in line with the priorities of 2007 Spanish OSCE Chairmanship.
