ALMATY, 6 April 2005 - Twenty eight journalists from all corners of Kazakhstan will take part in a seminar on investigative journalism in Almaty on 6 and 7 April.
The event, organized by the OSCE Centre in Almaty, will address the issue of the role of the media in maintaining a transparent, accountable and open society and government.
"Freedom of the media is one of the basic pillars of democratic development and of OSCE standards and commitments," said Ambassador Ivar Vikki, Head of the OSCE Centre. "Investigative journalism plays an essential role in promoting responsible business and good governance, in raising awareness of neglected issues and in initiating a public debate on socially important topics."
Media experts from Armenia, Germany, Kazakhstan and Russia will focus on different aspects of investigative journalism and share their experience. They will also discuss legal aspects of investigative journalism, as well as responsibilities and the Code of Ethics of Journalists.
The seminar will be conducted in partnership with the Institute for War and Peace Reporting, Transparency Kazakhstan, the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, the U.S. Embassy and Media Net Centre.
