OSCE Centre holds training seminars for border and customs officials in Turkmenistan

ASHGABAD, 5 March 2004 - Training seminars aimed at assisting Turkmenistan in strengthening the professionalism and operational capacity of its border and customs authorities will conclude tomorrow in Ashgabad.
The two-day seminars, organized by the OSCE Centre in Ashgabad in co-operation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, and held for the second time in the last two years, focus on combating trafficking in drugs, small arms and light weapons and in human beings.
The training also touched upon the legal framework for border and customs control and co-operation with other ministries and agencies at home and abroad, as well as specific problems concerning procedures at border and customs posts.
Officials from the Turkmen State Border and Customs Service, the ministries of Foreign Affairs and the Interior, and different State and regional bodies attended the course.
The lecturers, all experienced specialists in border and customs control, came from France, Germany, the Russian Federation, Turkey and Turkmenistan as well as from the UNHCR and UNODC Offices and the IOM Mission in Ashgabad.
The seminars were first held at regional administration level on 25 February in Turkmenbashi and will end on 6 March in Ashgabad. Other venues were Dashoguz and Mary.
