OSCE holds third roundtable on civil procedural code in Turkmenistan

ASHGABAD, 28 November 2003 - As part of its efforts to assist Turkmenistan in bringing its civil legislation into line with international standards and best practices, the OSCE Centre in Ashgabad held a third roundtable on the draft of the country's civil procedural code.
The event focused on cassation, mediation and special civil case proceedings. The invited expert speaker was Rainer Voss, presiding judge of the Duesseldorf regional court and President of the German Association of Judges.
Participants included representatives of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Justice, the Mejlis (Parliament), the Supreme Court, the General Prosecutor's Office and the Institute for Democracy and Human Rights.
The roundtable was organized by the OSCE Centre in co-operation with the Turkmen government and the Gesellschaft fuer Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ). The next event in the series of seven roundtable meetings is scheduled to take place in December 2003 and will focus on commercial arbitration and the role of the Procuracy.
