Training seminars for border and customs officials held in Turkmenistan

ASHGABAD, 22 November 2002 - A series of four training seminars aimed at strengthening the professionalism and operational capacity of Turkmenistan's border and customs authorities were concluded yesterday in the capital, Ashgabad.
The two-day seminars were held by the OSCE Centre in Ashgabad together with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mission in Ashgabad and were supported by United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Office in Ashgabad. Funds for the seminars were provided by UNHCR and the Federal Republic of Germany.
The seminars started at the provincial administration level on 11 November in Turkmenbashi and ended on 21 November in Ashgabad. Other venues were Dashoguz, Mary and Turkmenabat.
Mid-career officials from the Turkmen State Border and Customs Service, from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Interior, Defence and Security, the Prosecutor's Office, police and from the administration of the provinces were among the participants.
The seminars covered a broad spectrum, ranging from the legal framework for border and customs control and co-operation with other ministries and agencies at home and, abroad to specific problems concerning procedures at border and customs posts.
The lecturers, all with long experience with border and customs control, came from Turkey, France, the United States, from the UNHCR Office in Ashgabad, the IOM Mission in Ashgabad and from Turkmenistan.
