OSCE Centre helps train Turkmenistan officers in community policing
ASHGABAD 22 November 2006
ASHGABAD, 22 November 2006 - Six Turkmenistan police officials finished a week-long OSCE-organized training course on community policing at the Turkish Police Academy in Ankara.
The course, organized by the OSCE Centre in Ashgabad and Turkmenistan's Foreign Ministry, focused on the concept of community policing.
"Mutual trust and close relationship between municipal authorities, citizens and police are important factors in preventing crimes," said Dieter Matthei, the OSCE Centre's Political Officer.
"Close co-operation with the media and public implies creating a forum that will raise public awareness about personal safety measures and contribute to developing a police service that is representative of and upholds the values of the society."
Participants from police stations and crime investigation offices discussed the philosophy and basic principles of community policing and exchanged their experience on methods of establishing confidence in the police forces and building close co-operation with communities.
The training course is part of the OSCE Centre's support for capacity-building of Turkmenistan police officials and strengthening Turkmenistan's crime prevention schemes and police investigations.
