Head of OSCE Presence welcomes restriction of MPs’ and judges’ immunities in Albania

TIRANA, 18 September 2012 - The Head of the OSCE Presence in Albania, Ambassador Eugen Wollfarth, welcomed today the approval of amendments to the Constitution by the Albanian Assembly, restricting the general immunity from criminal prosecution of Members of Parliament, judges and other high-level officials.

“I congratulate all political sides for approving today this important piece of legislation. Being subject to the Constitution and to the rule of law is important for everyone, including public officials. There should be no impunity when the law is breached,” said Wollfarth. “The amendments adopted today by the Assembly remove a major obstacle in the investigation of alleged corruption cases. It is now up to the Albanian authorities to establish a convincing track record of verdicts and robust, appropriate sentencing or fines in all corruption cases.” 

“I also encourage a full and comprehensive debate and consultation with all stakeholders on other important areas that go to the heart of justice reform and the independence of the judiciary. The OSCE Presence stands ready to provide its expertise in such a process,” he added.
