OSCE/ODIHR experts visit Albania to support electoral reform process

TIRANA, 11 October 2004 - A two-member team of election experts from the OSCE's Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) began a two-day visit to Albania today. This follows an invitation by the OSCE Presence in Albania and is in line with the stated goal of the Albanian authorities, political parties and civil society to accelerate the ongoing electoral reform to a successful end.
The visit is part of the coordinated efforts of the OSCE Presence and the OSCE/ODIHR to support the electoral reform process in Albania in view of the 2005 general elections and to follow up on previous OSCE/ODIHR recommendations. This includes a thorough review of the Electoral Code and other pieces of legislation related to elections.
The team, which consists of Nikolai Vulchanov, Deputy Head of the OSCE/ODIHR Election Section, and Gilles Saphy, OSCE/ODIHR Election Adviser, will hold a number of meetings with Albanian officials and political party representatives, as well as with staff of the OSCE Presence and representatives of the international community in Albania.
