OSCE missions reconfirm support for combating trafficking in south-eastern Europe

TIRANA, 22 January 2004 - OSCE missions in south-eastern Europe reconfirmed their support to the governments of the region in combating trafficking in human beings, at a meeting of OSCE regional anti-trafficking experts that ended in Tirana yesterday. The two-day event was hosted by the OSCE Presence in Albania.
"Trafficking is an international, cross border crime, which requires a multi-dimensional approach," said Ambassador Osmo Lipponen, Head of the OSCE Presence in Albania. "Regional co-operation through information exchange of the best experiences and practices is necessary for a successful fight against this criminal phenomenon."
National Action Plans to combat Trafficking in Human Beings include important efforts in the fields of prevention and victims protection.
The OSCE Anti-Trafficking specialists stressed the need for more efforts in the fight against trafficking in children, and expressed their readiness to participate actively in developing government strategies on this.
Rrepresentatives from the OSCE missions in Kosovo, Albania, Moldova, Serbia and Montenegro, the OSCE Spillover Mission to Skopje, the OSCE's Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), as well as the Stability Pact Task Forces on Trafficking in Human Beings participated in the meeting.
