OSCE Presence conveys condolences for 9 January tragedy and pledges support to fight trafficking
TIRANA 13 January 2004
TIRANA, 13 January 2004 - The OSCE Presence in Albania extends its profound condolences to the Albanian people and in particular to the families of the victims of the tragedy of 9 January, when a number of young people lost their lives off the coast of southern Albania in an attempt to emigrate to Italy.
The OSCE Presence urges the Albanian authorities to bring to immediate justice all those responsible for this tragic loss of life.
Unfortunately, this tragedy, and the recent detention of a number of would-be emigrants at the Durres port, are a painful reminder that trafficking is still present and requires an even stronger commitment on the part of the authorities, civil society and international actors involved in the joint fight against trafficking.
The OSCE Presence pledges its continued support to the Albanian government in its fight against illegal trafficking in human beings and organised crime.
