Albania voters should verify voters list eligibility
TIRANA 12 September 2000
TIRANA, 12 September 2000 - The OSCE Presence in Albania adds support to the Central Election Commission (CEC) statement of 9 September concerning the final voter list for the forthcoming local government elections.
The CEC's aim, which is shared by the Government, the OSCE and the International Community, as well as by all the political parties, is to ensure that every Albanian citizen who has the right to vote, is given the opportunity to do so. Voter verification for next month's elections is almost complete and the final voter list is being updated prior to publication.
We would like to stress the importance of all voters checking the provisional voter lists to ensure that their names are included and the details correct. If they are not, they should report this immediately to their Local Election Commission so that remedial action can be taken. Any delay might result in individuals not being able to vote on election day.
At the same time, the OSCE Presence calls on the political parties to collaborate closely with the CEC to ensure the smooth running of the Local Government Election Commissions and asks that they remove any obstacles to co-operation among their members at this important time for the future of Albania.
