OSCE Presence presents project in support of Albanian Assembly
TIRANA 7 September 2007
TIRANA, 7 September 2007 - The OSCE Presence in Albania presented its parliamentary support project to deputies of the Albanian Assembly today.
The project will help further improve the Assembly's infrastructure, develop the skills of the support staff, enhance the capacity of the parliamentary committees, and improve the transparency and access of the public to the Assembly.
"This project is a joint effort of the Albanian Assembly and the OSCE Presence and is driven by the needs of the Members of Parliament and administration," said Ambassador Vacek, the Head of the OSCE Presence.
He hosted a meeting during which the Deputy Speaker of the Albanian Assembly, the Chairperson of the Assembly's Committees and members of the Albanian delegation to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly were given a detailed briefing on the project's activities.
The project will cost around 1.3 million Euros, and is mainly funded by the Netherlands through its Embassy in Albania. The first phase of the project was completed in 2006. It helped produce new Rules of Procedure, increase parliamentary role in the State Budget oversight and provided transcripts of the plenary sittings.
The presentation of the project was followed by a meeting that discussed co-operation between OSCE missions and Parliaments in South-Eastern Europe.
