OSCE, PAMECA organize training on witness protection for Albanian officials
TIRANA 25 May 2007
TIRANA, 25 May 2007 - A training course for Albanian officials on best practices in protecting witnesses and justice collaborators ended in Tirana today.
The week-long course was organized by the OSCE Presence and the Police Assistance Mission of the European Union to Albania (PAMECA).
Members of the Albanian Directorate for the Protection of Witnesses and Justice Collaborators and the Prosecutor's Office were trained by experts of the German Witness Protection Unit. Topics included the German legislative and institutional framework, practical, operational and financial aspects, as well as international co-operation in the area of witness protection.
"The Albanian Witness Protection Directorate is the key to ensuring the physical and psychological well-being of witnesses at risk for the sake of their effective participation in criminal proceedings," said Maya Goldstein, Senior Judicial Officer of the OSCE Presence. "We hope that the experience of other countries will help further improve the Directorate's work."
The OSCE Presence assisted in drafting and amending Albanian legislation on witness protection, the first of its kind in the country.
