Negotiations process on Transdniestrian settlement restarts in Chisinau
CHISINAU 23 August 2002
CHISINAU, 23 August 2002 - Negotiations aimed at making progress towards a Transdniestrian settlement have restarted in the Moldovan capital Chisinau. Yesterday's meeting at the OSCE Mission to Moldova was the first of the so-called "Chisinau Round" of negotiations.
Speaking to journalists at the opening of the meeting, Ambassador David Swartz, Head of the OSCE Mission, said, "We are going to exert all our efforts to ensure that this series of talks will be successful, and continue in a constructive and mutually trusting atmosphere."
Ambassador Swartz co-chaired the meeting with Ambassador Manuel Marcelo Curto, representing the Portuguese OSCE Chairmanship.
The closed-door meeting took place at the invitation of the mediators of the conflict: the Russian Federation, Ukraine, and the OSCE. It was intended to build upon the goodwill generated in a session held in Kyiv, Ukraine on 2 and 3 July. There the mediators presented a "non-paper" draft agreement to the representatives of the Republic of Moldova and Transdniestria, which called for the federalization of Moldova.
The "Chisinau Round" of negotiations is planned as a series of meetings that will rotate between the premises of the OSCE Mission to Moldova, the Embassy of the Russian Federation and the Embassy of Ukraine in Chisinau. The next session will be held in the Embassy of the Russian Federation on 28 August.
