Kosovo Mission chief to brief Permanent Council on elections preparations
PRISTINA 30 May 2001
PRISTINA, 30 May 2001 (OSCE) - Daan Everts, Head of the OSCE Mission in Kosovo, will brief tomorrow the Permanent Council on the on-going preparations for the general elections scheduled for 17 November, and on the operation to update the voters' list. He will be accompanied on this trip by Gary Matthews, Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMiK), and the four Kosovo members of the Interim Administrative Council (IAC).
"This visit to the OSCE Permanent Council is very important. The presence of the four Kosovo IAC members will help promote international support and goodwill towards Kosovo", Mr. Everts said before leaving for Vienna.
The Permanent Council, which meets every Thursday, is the OSCE's main consultation and decision-making body. Its members represent each of the Organization's 55 participating States. Kosovo is the OSCE's largest field mission and accounts for almost half of the organization's operational budget.
Mr. Everts and Mr. Matthews are being accompanied by the three Kosovo Albanian IAC representatives, Ibrahim Rugova, Hashim Thaci, and Ramush Haradinaj, and the Kosovo Serb representative, Rada Trajkovic.
Later on Thursday, the delegation will have separate discussions with a number of OSCE ambassadors. They will also meet the current chairman of the OSCE Permanent Council, Ambassador Liviu Bota from Romania.
