Seminar on the role of opposition parties in Kosovo

PRISTINA, 2 May 2001 - The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), Mission in Kosovo, will hold a one-day seminar on Thursday, 3 May, on the role of opposition political parties in municipal governance. The seminar will involve opposition representatives from a number of Municipal Assemblies in Kosovo.
The aim of the seminar is to raise awareness of the capabilities of and possibilities for opposition members. Participants will be presented with the role of opposition parties in western democracies. They will also discuss concepts of how to act constructively as the opposition within a Municipal Assembly. This includes such issues as articulating goals, developing policy alternatives, networking and gaining support for their objectives.The OSCE, through its Democratization Department, is working to provide elected representatives training on the practical tools of participatory democracy. Such seminars are to enhance the work of municipal assemblies in which the opposition should play a vital role.
