Presidential elections in Azerbaijan fall short of OSCE commitments

WARSAW, 16 October 1998 - The OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Foreign Minister Bronislaw Geremek, regrets that the Presidential Election in the Republic of Azerbaijan fell short of OSCE commitments. All necessary measures should now be taken to improve the functioning of democratic institutions and procedures.
In this regard, the Chairman-in-Office appreciates the noticeable efforts made by the State authorities to improve the democratic environment and express the readiness of the OSCE to assist them in developing stronger and more effective democratic institutions.
