OSCE supports seminar in Bishkek on public order management
BISHKEK 26 October 2007
BISHKEK, 26 October 2007 - Suppressing public disorders during rallies and demonstrations in the context of democratization of society was the focus of a seminar that ended in Bishkek today.
The two-day event was organized at the Kyrgyz Police Academy with the support of the OSCE Police Reform Programme and attended by high-ranking police officers, international and local experts, and NGOs.
"Participants at the seminar discussed the proposals for democratic public order management and conflict prevention through analyzing past lessons and improving the related legislation. In this regard, importance of upholding human rights during public meetings is the fundamental core of the seminar," said Knut Dreyer, OSCE Police Reform Adviser.
Cadets of the Police Academy were trained by Lithuanian expert Jonas Greiciunas. They demonstrated their new tactics on public order management in compliance with international and European standards, where principles of neutrality and proportionality apply.
