Deputy mission heads in Tirana to visit northeastern Albania
TIRANA 8 May 2002
TIRANA, 8 May 2002 - On the occasion of the "Europe Day" on 9 May, a delegation of more than twenty representatives of diplomatic and inter-governmental missions based in Tirana will tomorrow start a four-day visit to northeastern Albania.
The delegation, mainly composed of deputy heads of diplomatic missions, also includes Mr. Menachemoff and Mr. Sandoz Meszaros, Ambassadors of France and Hungary in Albania. During the trip, the group will visit the districts of Mat, Dibër, Kukës, Has, Tropojë and Shkoder.
The tour is aimed at identifying specific problems of the Northeast through meetings scheduled with local authorities, citizens, police officers and representatives of non-governmental and international organizations operating in the area. Issues concerning the political, economic and security situation will be addressed in order to recognize possible fields and methods of intervention for future development co-operation and promotion of the region.
"It's an opportunity not to be missed for the international community to get a closer and direct experience of the situation in the Northeast of Albania, an area which suffers for many reasons, one of which is its distance from the capital city." said Dr. Charlotte Watson, Deputy Head of the OSCE Presence in Albania.
Organized under the auspices of the Royal Netherlands Embassy by its Deputy Mr. Ard M.M. van der Vorst, this tour is the expression of a long-standing interest of the international community in the problems of the northeastern region of Albania.
"While this visit for Deputy Heads of missions is of an introductory nature, it is aimed at paving the way to possible further collaboration between existing structures in the Northeast and those both domestic and international based in Tirana", explained Mr. Van der Vorst.
Media representatives are invited to attend the press conference that the delegation will give in Kukës on 10 May at 18:30 at the Kukës Civil Society Development Centre (Lagja No. 2, Vila Elezi, prapa Hotel Gjallices, Kukes).
